In Mutable Air, Jacob R. Moses takes his audience on a journey through the trials and tribulations of characters caught in the void between trauma and triumph. Whether the conflicts are related to addiction, depression, loneliness, or a combination of all three, he acknowledges through his lines and stanzas the existence of an often ignored Purgatory-on-Earth: the terrifying moments between avoiding tragedy (and the inescapable memories that follow) and successfully moving on to a peaceful existence. For Moses’ subjects, it’s all about denying the metaphorical and literal neon signs, resisting the temptation to dwell on and relive past, dark life chapters, and blocking out the voices of doubters, whether it be those of others or their own.
Instead, they find solace in a cup of coffee, the embrace of another, and healthy introspection. The words found within Mutable Air’s pages are powerful and profound, and highly relatable to anyone who has ever found themselves deep inside a metaphorical tunnel with no visible light to be seen in either direction. It’s certainly not an easy place to be, but we can all be thankful that the poetry of Jacob R. Moses is here to take our hand and lead us to safety.

How do we find our voice when the world is losing its head and how do we lift our voices above all of society’s cacophonous noises? These are the questions posed by Jacob R. Moses’ latest offering. In this volume, our hero guides us through the murky quagmires of defeat, depression, heartbreak and addiction. But even in the depths of despair, there is electricity in the air. Within these pages, the mutable air hums with eschatological expectation as poets and prophets yearn for salvation.

Mutable Air touched on so many relevant areas of the human experience and used vivid illustrations to get to the depth of our longing and desires. It demonstrated a unique sensitivity towards differences and an empathy towards those facing significant challenges and dismay with society. Each poem showed great levels of vulnerability, compassion and desire that had me reminiscent of a time long ago; an area of my core that was dormant, but now startled. This group of poems is what I needed to reignite my love for the genre and to stimulate an interest in more works by Jacob Moses.
